Thrills and Spills at Thruxton!

Last weekend saw the Jack Goff Racing Team arrive at Thruxton for Rounds 5 & 6 of the AirAsia Renault Clio Cup.

Friday’s practice saw Jack suffering with problems in both sessions, with a stone going through the radiator at the beginning of session one, followed by a blow out that sent him off the circuit at Church in the second session.

Saturday’s qualifying started well and Jack sat in P2 for a while, however, he struggled with his second set of tyres and his position slipped down to P9. This meant that he would start Saturday’s race in P9 and that his second fastest lap had given him P6 for Sunday’s race.

Round 5 – Saturday

Yet again Jack had an amazing start and moved up to 7th as the pack pulled away, however this was fairly short lived as he ended up going through the gravel at Complex whilst trying to avoid contact with Jake Packun. This dropped Jack to 11th. As he began his bid to move back up the field, Josh Files spun in the middle of the chicane and there was contact with the front of Jack’s car. As he tried to avoid a massive collision Jack had to take to the grass which left him in 13th. As the race continued the tension built as Jack picked off the other drivers one by one and finished a very creditable 6th.

Later Jack said “I think I could have managed 5th but the safety car came out which slowed the pack down and the car developed a vibration through the steering. I decided to save the tyres and take the points for 6th.”

Round 6 – Sunday

An absolutely astounding start saw Jack move from 5th to 2nd on the run down to the chicane, but with Paul Rivett on the outside, Jack was on the inside for the second part of the complex which slotted him back in to 3rd.

As the front four runners began to work together to make a gap from the rest of the pack an accident brought out the safety car and everyone closed up again.

When the safety car went in Jack worked hard to create a gap between himself and Lee Pattison who was running in 4th. He maintained his position whilst gaining on the front two runners, and on lap 12 Jack got a run on Paul Rivett on the exit of Complex and spent half a lap side by side around some of the fastest corners of the track. Rivett just came out on top to retain P2. This tussle for second allowed Lee Pattison to close in on Jack, however Jack rebuilt the gap between them and Pattison dropped away. Jack stayed constant throughout the remaining laps and retained a fantastic third place for his second podium place in three race meetings.

After such an impressive performance Jack was interviewed by ITV4’s Louise Goodman who congratulated him on his performance at this notoriously difficult and demanding track.

Fantastic result Jack, the whole team and all of the sponsors are extremely proud!
